Kandota Township was organized in April 1870 and took the name of a townsite proposed and platted here in 1856 on the shore of Fairy Lake, by Edwin Whitefield. The site never developed into a town although it did have a Great Northern Railway station.  The name Kandota derived from the Dakota language is said to mean “Here We Rest.”  The townsite, the first platted in the county, was incorporated as a village on February 27, 1878.
